A dog named Thor left behind during heavy flooding in Texas was found four months later in California, thanks to his microchip, but no one knows how he got there.
Thor's owner, Eddie Hurtado, said he was forced to leave the 16-year-old pit bull behind with two other dogs while evacuating in May from severe flooding in the San Marcos area,
according to KIEM-TV. When Hurtado returned home, all of the dogs were missing.
Hurtado told the
Triplicate he believed the dogs were safe on the high ground at the back of his property, but high waters had washed away a fence there and the dogs had disappeared.
He said one dog, a chow-mix named Angel, was found shortly after he returned but Dallas, a female pit bull, and Thor were missing.
In late September, he was contacted by officials in Crescent City, California.
Justin Riggs, director of the Del Notre County Animal Control Division there, said how Thor got from Texas to California was a mystery, but they were able to identify him through his microchip.
"(Thor) was seen by a member of the public jumping off of the back of a truck and the truck went away without him," Riggs told KIEM-TV. "So we're not exactly sure what the full story was but he was brought in over a weekend and we came in Monday to see this beautiful Pit hanging out."
Riggs said he doubted the dog traveled to California on his own.
"We have had dogs wander 10 or 20 miles in the county, or even a little further but certainly there were people involved in this," said Riggs.
Arrangements were being made to return Thor to Texas.
The story is a positive example of getting microchips for animals.
"We got him in June of last year," said Hurtado. "I took him in February to get his shots and everything. That's when I got his chip put in. I figured if he got lost they would be able to find him."
