Something to be aware of on your holiday road trip: the worst drivers in the country are in Texas and Louisiana, a new study showed.
The study by CarInsuranceComparison.com ranked drivers in categories like failure to obey basic traffic laws, speeding, careless driving, and drunken driving.
The website compiled data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to formulate its findings, according to the New York Daily News.
According to the study, Texas and Louisiana tied for worst drivers, followed by South Carolina, North Dakota, and Delaware, the New York Daily News reported.
Minnesota was home to the best drivers, the study found, followed by Vermont, Virginia, Iowa, and Rhode Island.
Breaking down the data into specific categories, Texas ranked third for drunken driving and ninth for fatalities per mile driven and speeding, also ranking in the top 15 for all categories studied.
Texas transportation officials said on Nov. 4 that there had been at least one traffic fatality per day on a state road for the last 16 years, USA Today reported.
“These deadly crashes are a sobering reminder that we must do everything in our power to stay focused and safe while driving,” said Texas Department of Transportation Executive Director James Bass in a statement reported by USA Today. “Let’s end the streak.”
Louisiana drivers were ranked worst when it came to obeying signals and fifth worst for careless driving and fatalities per miles driven, the study found.
AAA projected that over 48 million Americans will be traveling at least 50 miles away from home over Thanksgiving weekend, an increase of 1 million from last year.
