"The Rock" admitted that he needs "experience" before seriously considering a presidential run, putting an end to any hopes that there will be a 2020 bid.
However, Dwayne Johnson embraced the calls from fans urging him to run for president.
Appearing on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" on Wednesday, he spoke candidly about the topic, addressing long-standing rumors of a possible 2020 campaign.
When asked by Colbert whether he would take such calls seriously, Johnson said he "absolutely" did, Newsweek noted.
"So when that started picking up, of course when I'm asked—yes, I have incredible respect for our American people and our country—so I said 'Yes, I would consider it,'" Johnson said.
However, he added that first he would need to gain more experience in the political sphere.
"But at the same time, Stephen, I mean look, I'm not delusional at all. Like, I feel like I… you know what it is? I need that thing… oh, experience," he added. "So if that were to happen in 2024, 2028, I would have to go to work and get some experience, you know, and understand policy."
Calls for Johnson to consider a presidential run first began in 2016, following an op-ed column that appeared in The Washington Post suggesting he would be a viable candidate. He has attended both Democratic and Republican conventions and has said that he is registered as an Independent.
Since then there has been much speculation on whether the actor would respond to the calls, but Johnsons has never dismissed the possibility.
"I care deeply about our country, and I care deeply about our people – especially now," he told Variety recently.
He also addressed the topic on Instagram, noting that "the idea of one day becoming President to create real positive impact and global change is very alluring."
Adding fuel to the fire, he told GQ that a run for office was "a real possibility,"
