Thigh Bone on Mars? NASA Explains Object That Resembles Leg Bone

By    |   Friday, 22 August 2014 06:27 PM EDT

An image captured by NASA on Mars appears to show an object shaped like a thigh bone, causing speculation online about what it might be.

The picture was captured by the MastCam on board the Mars rover Curiosity. As speculations with the words “alien” and “Martian” appeared online, NASA rushed to explain the what it was.

“No bones about it! Seen by Mars rover Curiosity using its MastCam, this Mars rock may look like a femur thigh bone. Mission science team members think its shape is likely sculpted by erosion, either wind or water,” NASA said. “If life ever existed on Mars, scientists expect that it would be small simple life forms called microbes. Mars likely never had enough oxygen in its atmosphere and elsewhere to support more complex organisms. Thus, large fossils are not likely.”

UFO-Blogger posted several pictures, including the recent "thigh bone," what looked like a finger, and even something that looked like a fossilized reptilian spine.

"It resembles the fossilized remains of a lizard-like sea creature with an elongated, twisting spine, much like those of reptilian 'dinosaurs' found all over archaeological digs explored on Earth for the last several centuries," UFO-Blogger said of the spine. "Right down to the tail."

The idea that a thigh bone may have been found on Mars excited conspiracy theorists, who sent the photo viral. Most people jumped to contain the rumors.
