Tiger Woods Article in Golf Digest Ripped by Ailing Golfer

By    |   Wednesday, 19 November 2014 06:10 AM EST

Tiger Woods ripped Golf Digest and legendary golf writer Dan Jenkins after the magazine printed a parody article on the one-time world's top-ranked golfer in its December issue.

Woods used Derek Jeter's website The Players Tribune to call out Golf Digest and Jenkins for what he called "a grudge-fueled piece of character assassination."

ESPN noted that Jenkins is a longtime Woods critic back to when he first joined the PGA Tour in 1996 and often complained that Woods would never agree to a sit-down, one-on-one interview.

In Jenkins' Golf Digest parody of a Woods interview, he asks why the golfer hasn't fired his agent Mark Steinberg after so many other high profile firings with his caddies and swing coaches.

"I'll probably get around to it," Woods responds. "I like to fire people. It gives me something to do when I'm not shaping my shots."

Because the golfer has been recovering from injury most of last season, Jenkins asks what he did most of the day in his large house.

"Let me think. Uh, new video games come out. I putt on the carpets. A closet somewhere needs color-coordinating. And of course there's always somebody to fire," Woods responds.

Wood wrote on the Players Tribune that he believed Jenkins parody was mean-spirited and put him in a bad light.

"All athletes know that we will be under scrutiny from the media," Wood wrote in his Players Tribune response. "But this concocted article was below the belt. Good-natured satire is one thing, but no fair-minded writer would put someone in the position of having to publicly deny that he mistreats his friends, takes pleasure in firing people, and stiffs on tips – and a lot of other slurs, too."

Jenkins, in turn, fired back with a post on Twitter Tuesday, doubling down on the article.

Woods' publicist Glenn Greenspan told ESPN that Jenkins' tweet just proved the writer's contempt for the golfer.

"The excuse from Jenkins and Digest that this is satire is even more deceitful," Greenspan told ESPN. "Journalists can't just add an asterisk or a question mark to any slander that they dream up and call it appropriate."
