Tim Tebow, the former NFL quarterback known for his Christianity, led airplane passengers in prayer for a man who collapsed during a flight on Sunday and later died.

On a Delta Airlines flight from Atlanta to Phoenix, Tebow emerged from first class to comfort and pray with the family of an apparent heart attack victim, the Florida Times-Union reported.

Erik Dellenbach, executive director of Tebow's foundation, confirmed the account shared by Facebook user Richard V Gotti. Gotti's post about the encounter was shared more than 10,000 times by midday Tuesday. He described passengers and crew pulling together to pray, help with chest compressions and start an IV for the unconscious man.

"Then all of a sudden, I observed a guy walking down the aisle," Gotti wrote. "That guy was Tim Tebow. He met with the family as they cried on his shoulder! I watched Tim pray with the entire section of the plane for this man."

The man later died at a hospital, People magazine reported.

"Tebow also helped the family get off the plane, picked up their luggage, and went with them to the hospital," People wrote. "He waited with them until they got the news that the man had passed away."

Twitter users shared mixed reactions to the encounter.
