This week’s cover of Time magazine linked the Baltimore riots to those that peppered America in the 1960s, highlighted with a striking image of the chaotic streets taken by an amateur photographer.
Time's story led with a high-impact opening line: “The city’s eruption follows decades of systemic failure.”
The cover photo is used in black and white, with the words “America: 1968” and in red ink, 1968 is crossed out and 2015 is written in.
The photo, which is getting a lot of news attention, was shot by Devin Allen, a 26-year-old Baltimore resident who wants to be a professional photographer. As the riot situation developed, he hit the streets with his camera, documenting the situation and becoming responsible for some of the
images that have gone viral, Time reported.
“For me, who’s from Baltimore city, to be on the cover of Time magazine, I don’t even know what to say. I’m speechless,” Allen told Time. “It’s amazing. It’s life-changing for me. It’s inspiring me to go further. It gives me hope and it gives a lot of people around me hope. After my daughter, who’s my pride and joy, this is the best thing that’s happened to me.”
The connection between race riots and issues of the 1960s to what is happening in the country today has been made on social media numerous times.
The Washington Post talked to Keyon Williamson about what is happening in Baltimore, his hometown. The 26-year-old owns hystyleforever.com.
“I’m not trying to justify nobody’s actions, but I definitely understand where the anger comes from. My understanding is that energy never dies. It’s a transferable source,” Williamson told the Post. “So, the energy and the anger from the ’60s riots transferred to now. It never dies. ... It’s definitely sad that it took a riot to get attention, because all these years we’ve been doing peaceful protests and we have gotten no attention.”
