If Caitlyn Jenner's transition to a woman took many by surprise, here's another: Pop singer Miley Cyrus has had hidden relationships with women while also having publicized relationships with men, and her mother Tish Cyrus has stood behind her since learning she was bisexual at age 14.
In a
Paper magazine article, Cyrus, 22, the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, said her mother stood behind her despite her struggle to understand.
"I remember telling her I admire women in a different way," said Cyrus. "And she asked me what that meant. And I said, 'I love them. I love them like I love boys,' And it was so hard for her to understand."
"She didn't want me to be judged and she didn't want me to go to hell. But she believes in me more than she believes in any god. I just asked for her to accept me. And she has," said Cyrus.
"Anyone that's ever said, 'Where’s her mother?' Right beside her – through good, through bad, through arguments, through crying, through I don't care what – right there," said Tish Cyrus in an
MTV documentary "Miley: The Movement."
Cyrus said she has had serious relationships with women like she had with previous boyfriends Liam Hemsworth, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Nick Jonas, but kept those out of public view.
"I don't relate to being boy or girl, and I don't have to have my partner relate to boy or girl. I've had (relationships with women). But people never really looked at it, and I never brought it into the spotlight," said Cyrus.
Miley Cyrus said her mother deserves credit for part of her success, noted MTV.
"My mom is my homey," the singer said of her mother in 2013, according to MTV. "If I win, she wins — not because she's my manager; because she’s my mom."
