A toilet flush in Orlando Airport delayed thousands of travelers over the weekend after the airport’s international arrivals area was flooded with sewage.
A person reportedly attempted to flush various items down a toilet on Saturday, including personal belongings such as clothing and packets of paper towels, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
Airport spokeswoman Carolyn Fennell told the newspaper that the incident "was certainly an inconvenience to some, but we moved very quickly."
The sewage spill resulted in a number of international passengers having to be bused to a different area of the airport while several planes had to be rerouted to different gates.
"As soon as we landed, they immediately told us that there were problems with the terminal and we would have to sit there on the tarmac for a while," traveler Mike Ortiz said, according to WFTV.
Ortiz said "there were carpets ripped up and there were floor fans trying to air out what was, I guess, some flooding going on."
The airport took to Twitter to announce the delays, blaming them on "peak travel time a maintence issue."
The person responsible for flushing the items down the toilet and ultimately causing the overflow has not been identified.
However, the International Business Times said staff from the airport were working hard to establish the person’s identity.
