Tom Hardy has been chosen to play Venom in the upcoming movie scheduled for release in 2018, directed by Ruben Fleischer (“Zombieland”).
The movie will be an extension of the Spider-Man universe, following on the heels of “Spider-man: Homecoming,” which will release in July, Variety reported. Sony snapped up the opportunity to cast Hardy after he exited “Triple Frontier.”
Hardy played Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises,” his only other superhero/villain role to date. Variety reported that sources have said Hardy is a huge Venom fan. The actor also starred in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” was nominated for a supporting actor Oscar for “The Revenant,” and is slated to appear in the upcoming “Dunkirk,” which is already getting Oscar buzz, according to Deadline.
Venom has been a popular Marvel character in the comics since his introduction in 1988, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He is an alien symbiote and needs a human host for survival, to whom he gives superpowers. Venom had a brief appearance in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 3.”
The script for “Venom” was written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. Pinkner worked on 2014’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” THR reported. Hardy will play Eddie Brock, who first becomes Venom.
Sony announced the role on Twitter with a photo of Hardy, who's professed to be a fan, in a Venom shirt.
Other fans were excited, too.
