"Top Gun 2," the long-rumored sequel to the hit 1986 movie that made Tom Cruise a Hollywood A-lister, was confirmed by the actor during an interview with an Australian morning show Wednesday.
Cruise appeared to have stunned cohosts of the Australia's Seven Network show "Sunrise" when he answered in the affirmative about a possible sequel to the enduring high-flying drama centered around Navy pilots at its top training base in California.
"It's true," Cruise said matter-of-factly when asked if "Top Gun 2" was in the works, leaving the hosts nearly speechless. "It's happening. … You're the first people I've told. It's going to happen."
Cruise, who appeared on the show to promote his new movie "The Mummy" with Russell Crowe, due out June 9, said he expects filming for the new "Top 2" to start next year, but did not offer any other details.
Rumors about a sequel picked up two years ago when David Ellison of Skydance Media, a production company based at Paramount Studios, confirmed that a script was being developed for the project, Variety reported.
"It is very much a world we live in today where it's drone technology and fifth generation fighters," Ellison said in June 2015, wrote Variety. "It's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today."
Cruise, co-star Val Kilmer, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer hinted about the idea for the past two years until Cruise blurted out the confirmation Wednesday.
"Top Gun" was the top grossing movie in theaters in 1986, according to Box Office Mojo, making $179.8 million. It made another $177 million overseas when that market was not a major factor in box office considerations.
