Travis Kvapil, NASCAR Driver Accused of Assaulting Wife, Will Race

NASCAR driver Travis Kvapil will race Saturday despite being arrested on misdemeanor assault charges involving his wife on Tuesday.

Kvapil will be part of the field at the Charlotte Motor Speedway for the BK Racing Team. Kvapil spent Thursday apologizing after qualifying for the race, according to The Associated Press.

"Obviously, there was a domestic situation Tuesday night with my wife. Regret that that happened," Kvapil said, wrote the AP. "Because it is a family, personal matter, we ask for respect and privacy in this situation and we try to work it out together as a family. I'm obviously embarrassed about the situation. I don't like the negative effects that it has brought on."

The Sporting News wrote that Kvapil is accused of pulling his wife into a bedroom by her hair and striking her in the head as she tried to pull away Tuesday night, causing minor injuries and resulting in his arrest, per police and court records.

Kvapil was released on $2,000 bond Wednesday morning and was not allowed to go back to his home, the Sporting News wrote that court records stated. His next court date is scheduled for Nov. 19, according to Iredell County (N.C.) District Court.

Authorities said neither Kvapil nor his wife were under the influence of alcohol. He has no previous record domestic violence, court records revealed.

Kvapil drives the No. 93 Toyota for BK Racing in the Sprint Cup Series. He is currently ranked 31st in the Spring Cup standings.

"BK Racing understands the severity of the situation and we don't condone the actions that Travis has been accused of," team co-owner Ron Devine told The Associated Press. "We feel it's important to let the system take its course. For that reason, we have elected to support Travis and his family and keep Travis in the car for this weekend's race. Further comment will be available as additional information becomes available."

Kvapil has raced at NASCAR's national level since 2001. NASCAR officials have said they are currently monitoring the legal action against Kvapil.
