NASCAR’s Travis Pastrana announced on his Facebook page Monday that he would not return to race next season.
“It’s tough to step back now and prove the critics were right, but unfortunately my results were not good enough to get the sponsors I needed to appropriately fund next season,” he wrote.

Pastrana began racing in NASCAR in 2012 after a career as an action sports star and winning 17 medals at the X Games. He’s had four Top 10 finishes this season and is 14th in nationwide standings.
“I hate to quit and I hate to fail, but sometimes things work out as they should. I've never been able to figure out the finesse required in pavement racing and that is disappointing, but I'm looking forward to driving more rally and racing more off-road trucks and there will be some announcements on those fronts shortly!” Pastrana wrote.
The sports star also said the grueling NASCAR schedule has been tough on his family and he’ll look forward to spending more time with his wife and baby daughter.
“My wife Lyn-z has been more then [sic] supportive of my foray into NASCAR, often times being my biggest source of encouragement and support,” Pastrana said. “But as my wife had to take a step back from being a professional skater to let me chase my goals in racing, I too need to take a step back and look at my situation as a father and husband. The NASCAR schedule is grueling and takes enormous sacrifices from those you love to make work.”
Pastrana said Lyn-z will be getting back to skating the Nitro Circus Live Tour.
Comments supporting his decision — and telling him he didn’t do a bad job at all in finishing 14th for his first full season — flooded Facebook.
“Travis – dude! This is in no way a failure,” wrote one man. “It’s an accomplishment to just be able to try your hand at these things, and there’s no shame in taking time away from THIS pursuit so you can trade places with your awesome wife.”
