Trayvon White Sr., a D.C. councilman who posted a Facebook video pushing a conspiracy theory not only that Jews control the weather but do it for financial gain, has been forced to issue an apology.
White, who represents Ward 8 on the District of Columbia council, posted the video on Friday, showing snow in the nation's capital with comments many considered anti-Semitic, WDCW-TV reported.
The Washington Post reported that White’s video pushed the idea that a Jewish banking family dating back to 19th century Germany, the Rothchilds, manipulated world events to its benefit.
"Man, it just started snowing out of nowhere this morning, man," White said in the Facebook post, which has seen been taken down, according to the website Forward. "Y'all better pay attention to this climate control, man, this climate manipulation. And D.C. keep talking about, 'We a resilient city.' And that’s a model based off the Rothschilds controlling the climate to create natural disasters they can pay for to own the cities, man. Be careful."
Rabbi Daniel Zemel told the Post the comments weren’t becoming of an elected officer.
"This kind of anti-Semitism is unacceptable in any public official," Zemel said, per the Post. "This so diminishes what America is about and adds to the oppressive feeling going on in the country right now."
White apologized on Twitter, saying he has learned that what he said was out of bounds.
"The Jewish community (has) been allies with me in my journey to help people," White said in the comment. "I did not intend to be anti-Semitic, and I see I should not have said that after learning from my colleagues." He said he had reached out to the organization Jews United for Justice, and they helped him understand the negative history behind the video and the comments. The organization acknowledged their conversation with White on social media.
Some, though, were still bothered by White's words.
