Trevor Noah, “The Daily Show” host, was the victim of a death hoax that claimed he was gunned down by a deranged fan while signing autographs for fans after a concert in Orlando.
A post appeared on website The Houston News, using a URL apparently designed to make readers think they were visiting The Houston Chronicle’s site, said Gossip Cop.
The hoax story used information and quotes from singer Christina Grimmie's shooting death in Florida last year as it’s basis.
“It was a two-gunned stranger -- possibly a deranged fan -- who murdered South African undisputed king of comedy Trevor Noah as he signed autographs after a night concert in Orlando,” said the fake news story.
“Police say Noah did not know the 27-year-old gunman who opened fire as the South African superstar signed autographs. The killer fired into Noah’s head and then killed himself as he was tackled by the comedian’s friend, Marcus. The gunman -- identified last night as Kevin James Loibl -- had travelled to Orlando from elsewhere in Florida with the intention of killing Noah.”
Grimmie was shot dead after Kevin James Loibl, wielding two handguns, opened fire on the singer before later fatally shooting himself, noted E News.
Noah dismissed the hoax on social media, tweeting a screengrab of the article.
Noah joined a growing list of celebrities targeted by death hoaxes over the past few months.
In January, a post on a website USA Today News reported the death of mixed martial arts fighter Ronda Rousey.
The post, which was later discredited, suggested the athlete, who reportedly had been found dead in her home, had possibly committed suicide, noted Snopes.
Actor Adam Sandler also fell victim to a death hoax after a news post claiming he had committed suicide appeared on LinkBeef earlier this year.
