Tropical Storm Harvey drenched several Caribbean Islands with heavy rain and strong winds Friday and is expected to reach near-hurricane strength by Monday as it approaches Central America and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

The threat of a storm surge and coastal flooding is strong for Nicaragua, Honduras, and Belize as the storm approaches and makes landfall, USA Today reported.

On Friday afternoon, the storm had sustained winds of up to 40 miles per hour and was moving west at 21 miles per hour, USA Today said. It was centered about 60 miles west of St. Vincent. It was passing the Windward Islands and was expected to bring one to two additional inches of rain to the Leeward and Windward islands including Guadaloupe and Grenada Friday afternoon, The Weather Channel reported.

Residents of these areas were warned heavy rains could trigger deadly flash floods and mudslides in the mountains, USA Today reported. Staying inside was recommended.

Two other weather disturbances were nearby Friday, but it remains to be seen whether they will strengthen or fall apart as they hit drier air and areas of wind shear, The Weather Channel reported.

Twitter users were alternately interested in the weather pattern and disinterested because it is not going to come near the U.S.
