Who would be worse for the country, Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton? Susan Sarandon teed up the question on cable TV earlier this week and it started a Hollywood liberals Twitter catfight, for lack of a more politically correct term.
Debra Messing joined in, then actress Kathy Najimy, all-around commenter Rosie O'Donnell, and Jamie Lee Curtis, and then a bunch of celebrities at a Clinton LGBT event in Los Angeles.
Sarandon, a vocal supporter of Bernie Sanders for president, started it on Monday. She criticized Hillary Clinton during an interview on
MSNBC, saying if the general election came down to a decision between Clinton and Donald Trump, a lot of people couldn’t bring themselves to support the Democratic frontrunner and she said thought Trump would “bring the revolution” many Democrats are chirping about.
Messing, a vocal Clinton supporter, objected to Sarandon’s comments on Twitter.
Sarandon retorted.
The exchanged sparked a debate joined by others, including Najimy and O'Donnell. Sarandon also responded to Curtis, who said she disagreed with Sarandon.
Sarandon attempted to clarify her position and highlight the dilemma for Sanders supporters if Clinton wins the Democratic nomination.
Messing said Democtrats should unite as a party behind whichever candidate received the nomination.
At one point, Sarandon criticized Messing for retweeting personal attacks, and Messing involved other celebrities at a Clinton LGBT event Wednesday night,
The Lost Angeles Times noted, adding that “the exchanges seemed to leave everyone involved just as convinced of their own positions as when the argument began.”
Twitter users reacted to the exchange.
