Tumblr's David Karp has resigned as CEO, announcing his departure from the company he created 10 years ago via an email sent to his staff on Monday, Business Insider reported.
The memo was later shared to Karp's personal blog and Twitter account.
"I've decided that 2017 will be my last year at Tumblr," he wrote. "I beg you to understand that my decision comes after months of reflection on my personal ambitions, and at no cost to my hopefulness for Tumblr's future or impact I know it can have."
Tumblr was owned by Yahoo since 2013 but, according to CNN, the web service provider was sold to Verizon earlier this year, and merged with AOL to form a new company called Oath.
Tumblr and Verizon hold contrasting stances on numerous topics including net neutrality, and many have wondered whether the deal would cause a clash.
Business Insider noted that, since the acquisition, many of Yahoo's senior management have left the company.
Karp's resignation along with that of Tumblr's head of communications, Karen Shosfy, serves to solidify the public's speculation.
News of Karp's announcement was confirmed to The Verge in a statement from Oath.
"David Karp will depart Oath by the end of the year," the statement read. "David founded Tumblr 10 years ago as a space for the world's creators, and we thank him for his commitment and passion driving the growth of the platform to almost 380 million blogs and over 155 billion posts."
Business Insider noted that Tumblr COO, Jeff D'Onofrio, will take over the company's reins.
