Twitter announced two new features on Tuesday: private group messages and 30-second videos.
Appropriately, the company notified the world with a tweet.
According to CNET.com, the company promised the group messaging feature back in November. As announced, "Direct Messages" or DMs can now take place among a group of up to 20 people. Text, emojis, and hyperlinking are just some of the things users can add to a chat.
In the past, when DMs were just one-on-one, users could only send a private message to one of their followers. Now, Twitter says, "The group function lets you start conversations with any of your followers and they don’t all need to follow one another in order to chat."
Along with the group messaging feature, which could help Twitter compete with messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Kik, the company also showed off a new video upload feature. The new functionality allows users to shoot, edit, and post clips up to 30 seconds in length within a tweet.
Actor Neil Patrick Harris, upcoming host of the 2015 Academy Awards, was the first to get his hands on the new feature.
