Country star Tyler Rich is shaken after discovering a dead body while out on a run on New Year's Eve. Taking to Instagram, the singer recounted coming across what he initially thought was a homeless man sleeping in a heavily wooded area. At first Rich did not think it was a cause for concern and continued running but decided to circle back to see if the man was all right.
"I realize he isn't breathing, and as I get around to the front of him, all I see is a lifeless face covered in blood," he recalled. Rich said it looked as if the man could have died from a gunshot wound to the head or from blunt force trauma. He immediately went to look for help and came across a couple who lent him a phone to contact the police.
Upon further investigation, authorities discovered a gun in one of the dead man's hands. Rich said it could have been a suicide adding that, although it gave him some comfort knowing that the body had not been discarded by somebody else, he was haunted by the image of what he saw.
"Something I’ll never unsee or forget," Rich wrote to Instagram. "He looked like a young, normal kid. Someone with a family probably wondering where he was."
In a follow-up post on Instagram, Rich wrote of how he spoke to the dead man's mother.
"Yesterday, I spoke to his sweet mom, which was one of the toughest things I can remember," he explained on Sunday. "We talked about the timeline and series of events. She told the last text he sent was at 11:11 [sic]. And I found him just 45 minutes later."
Rich said it was more than a coincidence that he discovered the body.
"I truly believe his spirit led me down that random side of the mountain to find him," he wrote.
"This specific series of little events is somehow bringing comfort to this family, and to myself," Rich added.
