Typhoon Danas Hits Japan, Causes Flight Delays, Ferry Cancellations

By    |   Tuesday, 08 October 2013 04:07 PM EDT

Typhoon Danas smacked southern Japan over the weekend, causing flight delays and ferry cancellations, before downgrading to a tropical storm and moving toward the north.

High winds, which at different times during the typhoon’s path reached 140 miles per hour, tore up a wall at the town hall on Yoron Island and forced Okinawa’s Nishihara refinery to stop operations, Bloomberg News said.

South Korea, Japan, and the United States delayed naval drills because of the typhoon, Arirang News said in a YouTube clip.

Southern Korea also saw some cancellations as the typhoon moved through, with the Busan Port Authority deciding to stop service between Busan and Jeju and cancel afternoon cruises to other destinations, Bloomberg said.

Storm chaser James Reynolds in Okinawa posted to social media as the storm hit.

Although Accuweather said strong winds could still cause damage in northern Japan, the storm has weakened. It’s expected to make landfall in the north tomorrow.

It’s now dropping heavy rains on Japan and South Korea, and Accuweather said some areas will get as much as six inches before the storms moves on. Threats still remain in southern Japan in the form of tornadoes and high winds.

That rainfall and the potential for mudslides in northern Japan caused Accuweather to warn residents to be cautious and be prepared for power outages.

Japanese News Today posted some of Reynolds’ video on YouTube:
