U2 Mandela Song at Oscars: 'Ordinary Love' to Be Performed at Show

By    |   Thursday, 13 February 2014 01:15 PM EST

Academy Award producers announced Wednesday that the popular Irish rock band U2 will perform its song "Ordinary Love" from the movie "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom," at the Oscars ceremony on March 2.

"Ordinary Love" is the odds-on favorite to win the Oscar for Best Original Song after capturing the Golden Globe in the same category in January, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  The song is up against "Let It Go" from "Frozen," "Happy" from "Despicable Me 2," and "The Moon Song" from "Her," which will all enjoy live performances.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Tony Award-winning Idina Menzel, who voiced the animated character Elsa in "Frozen," will perform "Let It Go."

Menzel shared her excitement about performing at the Oscars on Twitter.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' lead singer Karen O will perform "The Moon Song," which she co-wrote with "Her" director Spike Jonze. Pharrell Williams, who wrote and sings "Happy," will perform as well.

The original soundtrack to "Frozen" ranked No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart, while Williams has taken "Happy" to the No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles charts as of this week.

The "Ordinary Love" nomination is the second time U2 has been up for an Oscar. The group was nominated more than a decade ago for the song "The Hands that Built America" from 2002's "Gangs of New York."

U2 introduced "Invisible," the first song off its upcoming studio album, during the Super Bowl, according to The Reporter. Frontman Bono said that the band hoped to release the album sometime this summer. U2 has sold more than 150 million records worldwide since beginning in 1976.
