A UFO sighting in the Southern California night sky turned out to be an Elon Musk SpaceX rocket on a satellite mission, but only after freaking out some on the ground, including celebrities.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was launched on Friday night from Vandenburg Air Force Base in Lompoc, California to put a satellite into space, ABC News reported.

The Los Angeles Fire Department put out a media advisory to calm the nerves of many residents who sighted the rocket.

"Mysterious light in the sky is reported to be as a result of Vandenburg Air Force Base launching rocket to put satellite into space," said the fire department advisory.

Michelle Snyder, who watched the launch from a room at the Hotel del Coronado near San Diego, California, sent a video to Space.com.

"Caught off guard and had no idea what was happening at first ... must say it was one of my life's coolest moments," Snyder told Space.com. "A forever memory with my daughters and parents who were in town visiting for the holidays."

Some celebrities were confused by the blast off.

Musk could not resist to have fun with some of the wary witnesses while others enjoyed the beauty of the launch.
