United Airlines experienced a computer glitch that grounded a number of flights worldwide Thursday evening until the problem was resolved overnight, but many passengers were left less than satisfied.

The airline did not say how many flights were affected by the computer issue, but ABC News reported that the airline's website and cellphone app also did not operate for a short time as well.

"Earlier tonight we experienced an issue with our weight reporting system, which caused system wide flight delays," United said in a statement, according to ABC News. "We have resolved the issue and are working to get customers to their destinations as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience."

NBC News wrote that United originally said early Friday that 63 flights were affected, but spokeswoman Maddie King later retracted that number, stating only that just "a small number of flights" were inconvenienced.

Reuters reported that passengers in Paris complained about growing check-in lines for a flight to New York Friday morning.

The news agency said the computer glitch marks the third for United's owner, United Continental Holdings, recently. New software was needed when United's flight plan lost functionality on June 2, 2015, according to Reuters.

United flights were also disrupted in July 2015 after a computer problem blocked access to reservation records.

United issued a Twitter post early Friday stating that problems had been resolved, but passengers around the country and Canada took to social media to point out continuing problems.
