Ununpentium: New Element Discovered by Scientists in Sweden

By    |   Thursday, 29 August 2013 01:30 PM EDT

Ununpentium is the newest chemical element that scientists in Sweden have discovered, verifying claims that experts in Russia and the United States made a decade ago.

The Associated Press reported researchers at Lund University confirmed the existence of ununpentium.

The Swedish scientists say they conducted experiments which allowed them to detect the 'fingerprint' of the short-lived but super-heavy ununpentium element.

Ununpentium refers to the element's 115th place in the periodic table, as is roughly based on the Latin and Greek words for the digits in its atomic number. But the name "ununpentium" is only provisional.

Ununpentium will likely get a new name if the discovery is formally approved by experts from the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and Chemistry.

Well-known chemical elements include carbon, silicon and iron. Ununpentium hasn't been officially added to the list of elements, but the discovery sets the stage for its addition in the near future if it is approved by an international committee of scientists.
