The new U.S. Bank Stadium is apparently a death trap for birds, according to a survey that found dozens of birds dead on the premises.

In a two-hour period, volunteer groups at the $1.1 billion stadium that will be home to the NFL's Minnesota Viking's found 60 birds dead while surveying the premises, according to USA Today's For the Win.

The groups found an additional 14 birds that were “stunned.”

According to City Pages, among the dead birds found were “21 white-throated sparrows, nine ruby-throated hummingbirds, and one snow bunting.”

The findings suggest that up to 500 birds could die per year because of the new building, which would make the stadium the most deadly for birds in Minnesota.

“For comparison, the highest mortality recorded for a single building in Minneapolis during a three-year study of bird-building collisions was 250 birds over six migration periods, seven averaging 42 birds per migration period,” according to a report by the Audubon Chapter of Minneapolis, the Minnesota Citizens for the Protection of Migratory Birds and the Friends of Roberts Bird Sanctuary, CBS News noted.

“We knew that the glass would be highly confusing to the birds,” said Jim Sharpsteen, one of the volunteers, according to CBS News. “They see a reflection of a blue sky in the glass, they think it’s a blue sky. They see reflections of trees, they think they can land in those reflections of trees. This confirmed what we already believed would be bad.”

The organizations that issued the report are calling for the new stadium to replace the glass or apply some type of product to it that will limit the reflectiveness of the glass, CBS News noted.

However, replacing the glass would come with a hefty bill, estimated at about $60 million.

The Super Bowl is set to be held at the U.S. Bank Stadium in 2018.
