USA Fan Falls Out Window When Other Team Scores Tying Goal

Friday, 27 June 2014 11:22 AM EDT

USA soccer super fan Eric Corey took one for the team Sunday, falling out of the window of a Miami bar after Portugal scored the tying goal late in the second half in the American's second match in the 2014 World Cup.

Corey landed on the awning of the two-story Fado Irish Pub and was not seriously injured, reported the Miami Herald, but the incident illustrated just how excited U.S. soccer fans have been getting about the country's play in the World Cup this tournament.

The U.S. team advanced to knockout round of consecutive World Cups in the team's history Thursday, despite a 1-0 loss to Germany.

Corey is president of the Miami chapter of the American Outlaws, a nationwide group of U.S. soccer fans that have filled sports bars and other establishments around the country to root for the Americans, reported WSVN-TV. The Outlaws were in full force at Fado's for the county's match with Portugal, noted the Herald.

It looked like the U.S. team had all but locked up a victory over Portugal in the final minutes of play when Portugal scored the game-tying goal just before the contest ended.

"Eric looked heartbroken," American Outlaw fan Kenin Yombor told the Herald on Sunday. "I saw that he knew – he spread his arms to stop himself from falling out, but he saw that he was going out the window."

Corey had moved to the ledge of the window to lead cheers in the bar, which was open because of the heat, witnesses told the Herald.

"He's always up there," said American Outlaw member West Kraemer. "He stood where he's stood a million times before."

Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Ignatius Carroll said Corey declined to be taken to the hospital.

WSVN-TV reported that after Corey's fall, a posted popped up on the American Outlaws Miami Chapter's Facebook page reading: "Hey, Outlaws, I am alive and uninjured. Thank you for the prayers and best wishes."

Corey will get another chance to cheer for the Americans as they take on Belgium in the first matches of the World Cup's knockout round on Tuesday.
