UVa Missing Student Was Lost Before She Disappeared, Text Messages Show

By    |   Tuesday, 16 September 2014 01:46 PM EDT

The UVa missing student, 18-year-old Hannah Graham, reportedly sent a text message to a friend saying she was lost around 1:30 a.m. Saturday in what police say was her last known communication.

Authorities told WRC-TV that they planned to reconvene a search Tuesday after spending much of Monday looking for the University of Virginia freshman.

Graham was last seen leaving a party near 14th and Wertland early Saturday. Family and friends reached out to police Sunday afternoon when they didn't hear from her, The Charlottesville Daily Progress reported.

"Police detectives responded immediately and have been working to find Hannah since learning of her disappearance," Charlottesville police Lt. Ronnie Roberts told the newspaper. "A search using a bloodhound was conducted Sunday evening, but that search did not turn up anything useful."

People that knew her described Graham as a responsible young woman.

"Hannah is not the kind of kid that would just go on a road trip and disappear," Stephen Rice, Graham's former band director at West Potomac High School in Fairfax County, told WRC-TV. "She was always very diligent with everything she did, and always did everything exactly by the book."

University of Virginia president Teresa Sullivan expressed concern for Graham in a statement released by the school.

"The members of the University of Virginia community are united in our deep concern for U-Va. student Hannah Elizabeth Graham," the statement read.

Graham joins a running list of other unsolved Virginia disappearances. In 2010, 19-year-old Samantha Ann Clarke disappeared after leaving her Orange County, Virginia, townhouse.

Morgan Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student, disappeared from the John Paul Jones Arena in October 2009 after a concert. Her remains were found three months later in rural farmland. In both cases, no arrests were ever made, according to the Daily Progress.
