A Vermont restaurant's bacon ad has become a point of contention in the small town of Winooski after a self-proclaimed vegan Muslim resident asked that it be removed.
It all started last week when a woman pointed out that Sneakers Bistro and Café's "Yield for Sneakers Bacon" sign hanging in a garden at the Winooski Rotary was offensive to Muslims.
"Given the large number of Muslim families in Winooski, as well as many others who do not eat pork for a variety of reasons, it seems unnecessary for this insensitive business sign to be at the city's main crosswalk,"
the resident wrote on the Front Porch Forum community site.

The owners of Sneakers then took down the bacon ad and apologized for the controversy.
"Our goal is to bring joy to Winooski as a community gathering place — never a source of stress or drama," restaurant owner Marc Dysinger
wrote on Front Porch Forum, according to the Burlington Free Press. "We always appreciate any advice or input to help us achieve that goal. Thank you neighbors."
But Sneakers' decision to take down the sign at the woman's request didn’t exactly sit well with other Winooski citizens.
The flurry of criticism led Sneakers to defend its decision in a Facebook post.
"We are here to serve people BREAKFAST, not politics," the restaurant wrote. "We removed the sign that was located on public property as a gesture of respect for our diverse community. There were also concerns raised about safety. Removing it was not a difficult decision. We still love bacon. We still love eggs. Please have the political conversation elsewhere."
The issue, though, remains a hot topic and the restaurant eventually took down its entire Facebook page, according to the Free Press.
