Virginia Hospital Shooting: Bank Robber Wrestles Guard, Carjacks Woman

By    |   Tuesday, 31 March 2015 08:59 AM EDT

A Virginia hospital shooting resulted in a suspect on the loose this week after a man charged with armed bank robbery wrestled away his armed guard's gun and escaped in a stolen vehicle.

According to Reuters, a shot was fired in the struggle between the suspect and the guard, but no one was hurt during the escape from Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, which occurred around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Fairfax County Police identified the suspect as Wossen Assaye, and soon released a picture of him on Twitter.

Police said Assaye was likely driving a stolen 2002 Toyota Camry with damage to the front and the license plate number of XZP-8153. Fairfax County police spokesman Bud Walker said Assaye carjacked a woman around 7 a.m. in the Annandale area. The woman said Assaye was wearing a hospital gown at the time.

Thinking that he may now be with his girlfriend, police released a picture of her on Twitter as well.

After the escape, police put the hospital on lockdown, and closed off several nearby streets during their search. Hospital workers were told to take a shuttle to a nearby high school used as a staging ground for departures and arrivals.
