Waitress Controversy: Gay Server in Tip Stiffing Flap Is Let Go

By    |   Tuesday, 10 December 2013 07:13 AM EST

Dayna Morales, the gay New Jersey waitress and former Marine whose claims that a family stiffed her on a tip and scribbled a homophobic message on a bill were being investigated, no longer works at the restaurant at the center of the controversy.

Morales, who was a server as Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, N.J., posted a photo online last month of a family of four's restaurant receipt for $93.55. The image showed no gratuity and this note: "I'm sorry but I cannot tip because I don't agree with your lifestyle & how you live your life."

After going public with her story, Morales, 22, said she received nearly $3,000 in donations, which she said she would donate to the Wounded Warriors fund.

But after the family of four heard the story, they came forward and showed reporters a copy of their credit card statement, which proved that they left Morales an $18 tip. What's more, Wounded Warriors has no record of any donation from Morales, leading some to believe that the waitress concocted the entire thing as some sort of hoax.

Gallop Asian Bistro posted a message on its Facebook page over the weekend announcing that Morales would no longer be working there.

"Despite news reports to the contrary, this is not a simple, straight-forward matter and we have conducted our own internal investigation," the post read. "The results of that investigation are inconclusive as to exactly what happened between Ms. Morales and the customers that night. However, in light of the investigation and recent events, both Ms. Morales and Gallop Asian Bistro have made a joint decision that Ms. Morales will no longer continue her employment at our restaurant. We wish her well in the future."
