Walmart has apologized for making a cake featuring the flag of militant Islamist group ISIS.
Louisiana man Chuck Netzhammer explained in a YouTube video posted late last week that a Walmart in Slidell refused his request to make a Confederate flag cake emblazoned with the words "Heritage Not Hate."
Seeking to test what type of messages Walmart would and would not police, Netzhammer returned to the store, and requested an ISIS cake.
"I went back yesterday and managed to get an ISIS battleflag printed. ISIS happens to be somebody who we're fighting against right now who are killing our men and boys overseas and are beheading Christians," he says in his explanatory video.
"Walmart, can you please explain why you're alienating Southern Americans with this trash that you're allowing being (sic) sold at your store while at the same point, Confederate memorabilia is not allowed?" he asks.
John Forrest Ales, a spokesman for Walmart, said in a
statement to ABC News that along with retailers like Amazon and eBay, the company decided to pull all Confederate flag memorabilia in the wake of Dylann Roof's attack on a predominantly black church in Charleston, and that the making of the ISIS cake was simply an error.
"Our talented bakery associates take pride in what they create for our customers. It's unfortunate one customer thought to take advantage of an associate who did not know the flag and its meaning," said Ales. "This cake should not have been made, and we apologize for the mistake."
