Walmart Scorpion: Man Pinched When Reaching Into Box of Bananas

By    |   Wednesday, 25 June 2014 05:29 PM EDT

A live scorpion in a box of bananas at a Pittsburgh-area Walmart pinched a man when he reached into the box.

The man, who asked to remain anonymous, told KDKA-TV he was "standing there in a state of disbelief, not really believing that a scorpion had just grabbed onto me in Scott Township."

“I yanked my arm out and flung it, and this scorpion flopped to the ground,” he said. “I was standing there in disbelief looking and there was another shopper there and people started to converge, and sure enough it was a scorpion.”

The man’s 2-year-old and 3-year-old children were in the cart. He threw a lid on the scorpion and squished it.

The man, who wasn’t seriously injured, said Walmart offered to pay his medical bills.

The company’s food safety team, produce suppliers and third-party pest control provider were alerted, and no other scorpions were found in the store, Walmart representative Betsy Harden said, according to Trib Total Media.

News of the encounter spread on Twitter.
