A Walmart loss-prevention worker was shot and killed when he attempted to stop a man from stealing three flat-screen televisions from the Lilburn, Georgia, store on Sunday.
The worker, 25-year-old Jaseramie Dion "JD" Ferguson, was a married father of three who had worked at the store for seven months,
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
A search continued Monday for the suspect, who drove away in a red four-door sedan.
The incident occurred at about 9 p.m. Sunday, when the suspect allegedly shot Ferguson with a .380-caliber pistol,
CBS Atlanta reported.
The suspect, seen in a grainy surveillance photos, is described as a dark-skin black male, medium build, 30 to 45 years old with a bald head or short haircut. He was wearing a button-down shirt and dark pants.
Ferguson was one of two security guards who approached the suspect, who is accused of trying to steal three flat-screen TVs from the store. The suspect left the store without the TVs and officers don’t know what caused him to shoot. Walmart loss-prevention officers don’t carry weapons.
“We don’t know,” Lilburn police Capt. Thomas Bardugon told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “You never know what someone is thinking.”
Bardugon described the encounter to
WXIA-TV.
"He actually got in the lobby area past all points of sale, got past the first door, was about to go out the exterior doors to the parking lot when he was stopped," Bartugon said. "There was a brief struggle that ensued and during this struggle the suspect produced a pistol. He fired at least one round that struck the loss-prevention officer."
Ferguson is survived by his wife, Tiana, son, Jordan, and two daughters, Aryana, and Ava.
A GoFundMe page for the family had raised more than $9,635 of its $20,000 goal as of Tuesday morning.
