The weekend box office results are in and "Deadpool 2" has toppled "Avengers" for the top spot after posting an opening of $125 million, The Wrap noted.
The 20th Century Fox film set a new opening day record for R-rated films with $53 million however, the film still fell short of initial estimates that it would fetch between $130 million and $150 million over the weekend.
It also missed the $132 million target set by the first "Deadpool" two years ago.
The original film went on to earn $363 million in North America and $783 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
The Ryan Reynold's sequel however, saw Saturday returns dropping by more than 20 percent.
Despite this, "Deadpool 2" joins its predecessor as the only films released by Fox since 2011 to score openings above $100 million, and has earned itself the title as the second-biggest launch and widest release in Fox's history, The Wrap reported.
"Avengers: Infinity War" meanwhile is still being celebrated as a smash hit, even if it lost its crown as the reigning box office champ.
The Marvel film raked in $1.81 billion globally in less than a month since its release, earning $113.1 million around the world this weekend alone, CNN reported.
This makes it the fourth biggest global opening in history and the highest grossing superhero film of all time.
Both "Infinity War" and "Black Panther" have been vital in elevating the overall domestic box office to $4.35 billion this year as of May 16, which is up 3.8 percent over 2017.
With the upcoming release of Disney's "Solo: A Star Wars Story" this Memorial Day weekend, it is shaping up to be a thrilling month for moviegoers.
