Westboro Baptist Church 'Golden Globes' Protests Target Gay Marriage

By    |   Monday, 13 January 2014 07:58 AM EST

The Westboro Baptist Church targeted parishioners at four churches in California's Glendale area Sunday morning in what some labeled as the Golden Globes' protest, due to its proximity to the award's show that took place in Beverly Hills on Sunday night.

The extremists were reportedly met with counter protestors everywhere they went, waving gay flags and signs that challenged their fanaticism.

The Westboro Baptist Church's website said Sunday's protests were targeted at "phony Christians" and same-sex marriage, KTLA Fox40.com reported.

The churches selected for the Sunday protest were reportedly Holy Family Catholic Community, Salem Lutheran Church and School, Glendale Presbyterian Church, and Methodist Church of Glendale.

Those involved in the counter-protest claimed their presence was to provide a "wall of protection," shielding parishioners from the hate-filled rhetoric being spewed by Westboro Baptist Church members.

According to the Glendale News Press, hundreds came out to protest the Westboro Baptist Church Sunday morning throughout Burbank and Glendale.

Referring to the counter protestors, Pastor Keith Banwart Jr. of St. Matthew’s Church, told Glendale News, "these people want to show that God’s love is bigger than the hate that may be displayed here this morning."

"We know that the folks in Westboro are angry, and that comes out in hate," Salem Lutheran Pastor Kurt Christenson said while as protestors played music and carried signs across the street from his church. "At this point I think they’re just angry at everything. I think they’re angry at the way America seems to be going. It’s not like it used to be."

"They’ve decided they don’t want to engage in conversation. They just want to yell and scream and protest," Christenson added. "There is an opportunity to say at the end of the day that love is stronger than hate."
