Mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger was found guilty Monday of 31 crimes, including racketeering and his involvement in numerous murders.

At age 83, Bulger is likely to die in prison, as the federal racketeering charges could result in life imprisonment at his sentencing, which is scheduled for Nov. 13, CNN said.

The jury determined that Bulger was guilty in 11 of the 19 murders with which he was charged. Some family members of murder victims were in attendance at the court and cried as the deaths of their loved ones were vindicated, although others left when the jury had no finding in one murder and the government failed to prove the case in seven murders, CNN said.

The news organization said the only “not guilty” verdict was for the alleged extortion of Kevin Hayes, who had reported that he was supposed to give payoffs to Bulger in order to operate his ticket business in the 1990s.

The trial, which went on for seven weeks, highlighted crimes that occurred while Bulger ran the Irish mob in Boston from the 1970s through 1995. The multi-layered case drew public attention, particularly for allegations against the FBI, and that a bad agent had warned Bulger he was about to be arrested. That occurred in 1995, when Bulger went on the run.

He was arrested in 2011, living in California, living under an alias with his girlfriend.

The verdict was the end of a vicious life of crime, ABC News said, which included accusations that he strangled two women, shot two men, and killed anyone who caused him problems.

Actor Jack Nicholson based his portrayal of the mob boss in “The Departed” on Bulger.

It took the jury almost five days to reach their decisions on the various charges.

Michael Donahue was only 8 years old when Bulger was responsible for the death of his father, Michael Donahue, who was an innocent person killed in gunfire.

ABC reported that when he heard the verdict in his father’s death, he said, “I wanted to jump up. I was like, ‘Damn right.’”
