Iconic "Star Trek" actor William Shatner has signed with Heartland Records and may be making a country music album that will release later this year.

The Nashville record label said in a news release that Shatner is “currently working on a very special project that will be released later this year,” Fox News reported. No confirmation about what kind of album it will be was given, but the label promised more details “would be released soon.”

Shatner, 86, has released eight previous albums, the most recent one, “Ponder the Mystery,” in 2013. Most of his previous recordings have been eclectic musical and spoken word selections. This would be his first country music effort.

Shatner does have connections in the country music business, however. He counts Vince Gill and Brad Paisley among his friends, KNCI Radio reported.

Other artists that record with Heartland include Cash Creek, Alabama’s Jeff Cook, Magnolia Belle, and Rebecca Frederick, Taste of Country reported.

Shatner most famously played Captain James T. Kirk on "Star Trek" between 1966 and 1969.

Twitter fans were a little unsure of the move, but praised his other musical efforts and continuing energy even well into his 80s.
