Wilt Chamberlain, one of the all-time great basketball players, is the first NBA player to be immortalized on a U.S. Postal Service stamp.
Calling Chamberlain “the icon whose dominance literally changed the rules of basketball,” the
USPS said in a release that the stamp will be dedicated by NBA players Julius Erving and Wali Jones during the halftime of Friday's Philadelphia 76ers and Oklahoma City Thunder game.
“When it came to determining the first NBA player to be honored on a stamp, Wilt Chamberlain was a slam dunk,” USPS general counsel and Executive Vice President Tom Marshall said in a release. “At 7 ft. 1 in., ‘the Big Dipper’s’ physical stature, athleticism and talent helped him to dominate the NBA and to put an indelible mark on the NBA record books. We decided to portray his dominance on the court with two towering Forever stamps depicting Wilt in the uniforms of two of the NBA teams for which he played. ... And what better place to dedicate Wilt’s stamps than his hometown — the City of Brotherly Love.”
The stamp will also have an online presence tied to the hashtag #WiltStamp, the release said, as current and past NBA players have a “Twitter huddle,” chatting online throughout the game.
The Chamberlain stamps are larger than the typical commemorative stamp at just over 2 inches tall. They feature portraits of the NBA star in a Philadelphia Warriors uniform and in the Los Angeles Lakers uniform.
Fans showed their support of the Chamberlain honor online.
