"Denver Zoo security was alerted that a disoriented woman was found inside an animal yard in the zoo's Toyota Elephant Passage exhibit,"
Denver Zoo officials said in a statement to NBC affiliate 9News. "No animals were in the yard at the time."
"The woman was transported for medical care. Denver police and Denver Zoo are talking to guests to determine what happened," the statement continued.
Initial news reports stated that the woman, who was not identified, had been shocked after she attempted to sit on the electrical fence around the elephant enclosure; however that report was later disputed by Denver Police.
According to 9News.com, the 10-acre Toyota Elephant Passage exhibit was designed to house up to eight Asian bull elephants. The enclosure also reportedly houses one-horned rhinoceros, clouded leopards, Malayan tapirs, fishing cats, small-clawed otters and flying foxes in other areas separated by gated passageways.
The incident occurred during the Denver Zoo Lights holiday event in which visitors enjoy 150-light animated animal sculptures over a 38-acre area.
