Women's Equality Day Celebrates the 19th Amendment Across the Globe

Women’s Equality Day, which celebrates the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote and the vast accomplishments by women through the years, is being commemorated across the globe today.

The U.S. Congress established Women's Equality Day in 1971, according to the National Women's History Project.

Sharon Day, co-chair of the Republican National Committee, wrote in a blog post Monday that progress for women can be seen in every aspect of society, and the United States has led the way for women's rights.

"In the 93 years since women gained the right to vote, we’ve certainly come a long way," Day wrote. "We occupy positions in every level of business and almost every level of government and young women are the majority of students at the country’s colleges and universities."

Saundra Pelletier, CEO of Woman Care Global, wrote in a Huffington Post column that empowering young girls to follow their dreams is the best way to push the women’s rights movement forward.

"Empowering girls may be the greatest strength we possess to redefine equality and fight social and economic inequities," Pelletier wrote. "By giving girls the tools to succeed as women, economies grow. Statistics from the World Bank show that closing the joblessness gap between girls and their male counterparts would yield an increase in GDP of up to 1.2 percent in a single year."

President Barack Obama’s press office issued a release Monday about how the administration passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to combat the gender wage gap; women are paid 77 cents for every dollar men make.

"It is also why I established the National Equal Pay Task Force, which is cracking down on equal pay violations at a record rate," Obama said in the release. "And it is why I issued a Presidential Memorandum calling for a Government-wide strategy to close any gender pay gap within the Federal workforce."

Day wrote in her blog what gender equality means.

"As I travel all over the country talking to clubs and committees, meetings and seminars, I’m often asked about 'women’s issues.' My reply is the same: women’s issues are everyone’s issues — jobs, healthcare, education, entrepreneurship, government spending, and so on. We’re not some special interest group. Equality means there aren’t women’s issues and men’s issues; there are just issues," Day said in her blog.
