A Wonder Woman U.N. staff petition is urging the group to rethink its decision to appoint the character as its new Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls.
The petition was started by "concerned" U.N. staff members who want the organization to reconsider their choice, arguing Wonder Woman’s "current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit with an American flag motif and knee high boots — the epitome of a 'pin-up' girl."
The petition also states disappointment that the U.N. “was unable to find a real-life woman that would be able to champion the rights of ALL women on the issue of gender equality and the fight for their empowerment.”
Despite the backlash, U.N. leaders say appointing the fictional hero is a creative way to reach the younger audience.
Anne Marie Goetz, an academic and a former adviser to the U.N., took to Twitter to call the choice "disgusting" and encourage Wonder Woman to use her lasso of truth to expose the United Nations’ "hypocrisy."
According to The Seattle Times, Stephane Dujarric, a U.N. spokesman, said Thursday that leaders of the organization have listened to the concerns and are taking them into consideration in terms of how they go about the campaign moving forward, saying that they plan to “bring a celebration of real-life women and girls making a difference every day into the core messaging.”
“We work and engage with amazing women around the world every day and have many strong, real-life women who advocate on behalf of the U.N. for rights of women,” Dujarric said. “These include Alaa Murabit of Libya, Leymah Gbowee of Liberia, the Brazilian soccer player Marta, and Angelina Jolie, to name just a few.”
U.N. staff members are seeking 1,000 signatures to get the secretary general to "consider the appointment of a real-life female role model that women and girls in the world would be able to look up to, irrespective of their cultural background," the petition states.
The ceremony to appoint Wonder Woman is still expected to take place Friday as scheduled and could be met with a silent protest, The Seattle Times noted.
