An ice cream sundae more than half a mile long has been officially declared a world record for the longest ice cream dessert ever by the Guinness Book of World Records.
An estimated 15,000 people ate the 2,970 foot sundae in June as it lined eight blocks in the town near Lake Michigan, about 100 miles northwest of Grand Rapids, The Associated Press reported. Ice cream company House of Flavors set up the ice cream event and provided the sundae.
According to World Record Academy, 12,700 scoops of ice cream, 2,000 maraschino cherries, and 600 cans of whipped cream were used in the concoction. In order to qualify for the record book, official measurement had to be taken and documented. The sundae also had to be continuous, toppings had to cover it completely, and it had to be eaten completely.
Owner Barry Neal reported many small businesses collaborated to make the sundae a success.
“It is overwhelming, the kindness and the generosity of those who have stepped up to volunteer, donate products, their energy and their time,” Neal told World Record Academy. “In Ludington, we’re not afraid to try big things.”
The previous record for longest ice cream dessert was won in 2015 in Manurewa, New Zealand. It measured 1,957 feet and one inch.
The newest sundae record may have already been broken, however, since Moo-ville Creamery and others in Nashville, Michigan, created a dessert measuring more than 3,656 feet in September, The Associated Press said. This record attempt has not yet been evaluated or verified by Guiness.
