Train service was temporarily halted in Tokyo Tuesday after an unexploded World War II bomb was discovered at a construction site in the country's busy capital.

A total of 150 train services, including 53 Shinkansen bullet-train services, were affected, a spokesman for East Japan Railway told Agence Presse France, adding 90,000 people would be affected.

Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force was dispatched to safely detonate the dud, which is believed to have belonged to Japan's Imperial Forces. The rusty, 40-centimeter (16-inch) shell was found during excavation work.

Stumbling upon unexploded missiles is not uncommon in Japan's cities, which were heavily bombed by the U.S. during World War II.
