The world's oldest newlyweds married recently after 27 years together and now the 103-year-old groom and his 91-year-old bride are also Guinness World Record holders.
George Kirby and Doreen Luckie said their vows on Kirby's 103rd birthday at the Langham Hotel in Eastbourne, England, in front of 50 family members and friends, as well as one
Guinness representative, according to Express.co.uk.
Both were married previously and, between them, have seven children, 15 grandchildren, and
seven great-grandchildren, according to Yahoo. They beat the previous combined age record held by French couple Francois Fernandez and Madeleine Francineau who had 191 years between them.
Decades ago, Kirby enlisted in the Royal Air Force as a physical education instructor and proved himself as a talented boxer, winning all 60 fights that he had ever entered. He remained physically active until he gave up lifting weights at age 94. Luckie worked as a
legal secretary before she retired, according to CBS News.
The two lovebirds met in 1988 and hit it off almost instantly. Kirby had just come out of a divorce and Luckie had been a widow for three years. At the prodding of his son to finally make “an honest woman out of her,” Kirby proposed to Luckie on Valentine’s Day this year.
“I didn't get down on one knee, because I don't think I would have been able to get back up,” Kirby said, according to Yahoo.
The new bride beamed on her special day in her white and blue floral dress as she pushed her new husband in his wheelchair.
“Doreen keeps me young and I can definitely say we’re going to spend the rest of our lives together,” Kirby told Express.co.uk.
The couple asked that their guests, in lieu of buying them any personal wedding gifts, donate to the Royal Air Forces Association and the Women’s Royal Naval Service.
