Wrong House Demolished in Forth Worth After Contractor Mistake

Oops. The wrong house was demolised in Forth Worth, Texas, after a contractor hired by officials accidentally left the doomed structure standing and took down the one nearby.

Homeowner David Underwood and his wife learned of the mistake when they drove up to the lakeside home but couldn’t find it.

“We came around Silver Creek looking for the lot an my wife said, ‘David ... I think the house is gone,’” homeowner David Underwood told KDFW-TV in Fort Worth. “I was like, what? And we looked up there and sure enough, it’s gone!”

The owner of the mistakenly demolished home said city officials have asked him to determine what the house, built in 1951, was worth, The Associated Press reported.

The condemned house that was supposed to be destroyed had been targeted for demolition since the beginning of the year, said the AP. It was still standing.

Neighbor Samantha Farmer didn't seem surprised about the news. She told a local CBS station, “To be honest, all those houses up there have been kind of … junky. So I could see how they could have gotten it mistaken for the wrong one.”

Social networkers were having a field day with the news.

“Dude, where’s my house?” tweeted @1tallmidget.

“O U think you had a bad day? The @CityOfFortWorth completely demolished a man’s house by mistake,” wrote @BudKennedy.

“How do you demolish the wrong house!” tweeted @Flaunt_it_Nessa.

“Govt. incompetence,” quipped @ddog31.

“That awkward moment when you completely demolish a house & throw out everything & then find out you’re at the wrong house,” tweeted @lilyjane13

Underwood said the three-bedroom, ranch-style house was once owned by his grandmother. He was planning to fix it up and move into it. He said he hadn’t been in the home for several weeks and the utilities had been shut off.

Underwood was understanding of the mix-up. “It’s an accident,” he told KDFW-TV. “Let’s just do what’s right and move on.”
