Yahoo tops Google in a report as the top-ranked Web company for July in terms of page views, according to comScore data.

Yahoo sites captured 196,564 unique visitors in July, compared to the 192,251 unique visitors to Google, the report shows.

According to MarketingLand.com, this marks the first time since 2008 that Yahoo ranked at the top.

Yahoo’s numbers do not include the numbers for Tumblr, which the company bought in May. Tumblr came in at 28th place on comScore’s list with 38 million unique visitors. Its properties include its home page, as well as a raft of sites that include news, finance, and sports.

In June, Google led with 193 million users and Yahoo had 189 million.

However, comScore did not include mobile phone traffic, The Wall Street Journal notes, and when mobile is entered into the equation in upcoming rankings, Google may be back at the top. The story also pointed out that Yahoo still has several challenges ahead, including monetizing the traffic.

Bloomberg News said that Yahoo’s second-quarter earnings, not counting sales it passes on to partner sites, fell 1 percent to $1.07 billion, missing analysts’ estimates of $1.08 billion.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has helped engineer a number of acquisitions over the past year, and said last month that the company had stemmed a slide in Web traffic throughout last year, The Next Web reported. Yahoo’s traffic in July of 2012 was at 163 million, with Google’s at 190 million at the time.

In a news release announcing the latest numbers, comScore said “back-to-school shopping was top of mind for many Americans in July, seen by a spike in traffic to Fashion and Accessories sites, as well as Consumer Goods sites for school supplies. Coupon sites also saw pickup as consumers went on the hunt for savings.”
