Yuengling Revives Ice Cream Business, But No Beer Flavor

After a nearly 30-year hiatus, Yuengling ice cream is back. Just don't count on a beer flavor.

The Pennsylvania-based brewery will soon unveil 10 flavors that will be available in stores beginning in mid-February. The all-natural ice cream offerings will include common flavors like vanilla, chocolate, and mint chocolate chip, as well as a unique variety called black and tan (a mix of Belgian chocolate and salty caramel), USA Today reported.

Acme and Weis grocery stores will carry the ice cream, as well as some independent grocers in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York. The cost will range from $5.49 to $5.99 per quart, according to The Allentown Morning Call.

Yuengling first sold ice cream in 1920 when Frank Yuengling sought a way to survive during Prohibition. The brewery then ceased all dairy production in 1985 because of a lack of a successor.

"I graduated college in 1984 and had decided to go into computer science," David Yuengling, son of then-president Frederick "Fritz" Yuengling, told The Morning Call. "My brother, who was four years older, was already a banker. Neither one of us wanted to get into the ice cream business, so my father decided to shut it down and get into other things."

When approached recently by a family friend with the idea of re-launching the business, Yuengling jumped at the chance.

"When you get out of college, you know everything," he told the paper. "I had the opportunity to change a decision I made 30 years ago, and I thought it would be fun. I'm a prime example that you can get into one industry and at any time you can change and wind up doing something totally different."

According to the International Dairy Foods Association, most of the U.S.'s ice cream and frozen dessert makers have been in business for more than 50 years and many are family-owned.
