The Copenhagen Zoo has killed four lions — two adults and two cubs — to make room for a new male lion after inciting an uproar last month when it killed a healthy giraffe to prevent inbreeding.
The zoo said the move was part of a generational shift and
protects the "pride's natural structure and behavior," The Associated Press reported. The two cubs, not old enough to fend for themselves, were put down because the new older male would have killed them anyway, the zoo said.

The zoo hopes the new male lion will form a pride with two females born in 2012.
Last month, a giraffe named Marius was killed, dissected in front of a crowed, and fed to the lions at the zoo. It's unknown if the lions that were killed Tuesday were among those that fed on the giraffe.
Twitter was aghast at the killing of the lions.
