Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., is putting pressure on companies pushing coronavirus antibody tests that may not meet “a reasonable standard of accuracy.”
Krishnamoorthi is chairman of the House Oversight subcommittee on economic and consumer policy.
In a letter to four companies, Krishnamoorthi asked for information about the firms’ contact with the Food and Drug Administration and details supporting the accuracy of their tests, according to Politico.
In addition, he is asking for a list of medical facilities who have bought the tests from the companies.
"The subcommittee is concerned that FDA is not conducting substantive review of serological tests that it has allowed on the market and that those tests may not meet a reasonable standard of accuracy," Krishnamoorthi said in the letters.
The mailings went out to North Carolina-based BioMedomics, San Diego's Epitope Diagnostics, Minnesota-based Premier Biotech and UCP Biosciences of San Jose, California, Politico said.
Government officials and health experts have pointed to using antibody tests as a way to safely reopen communities.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the state is beginning antibody tests to help determine how many residents were infected by the coronavirus.
